Care Tips:

  • Hairless variety needs sunscreen and moisturiser to protect their skin

  • Low shedding and great for owners with allergies

  • Needs a sweater or coat in cooler weather due to lack of fur

  • Moderate exercise needs and happy with short daily walks

Fun Fact: The Chinese Crested has won the World's Ugliest Dog Contest multiple times, but to their owners, they are absolutely adorable!

Health

  • Generally healthy but prone to:

    • Skin conditions — sunburn, acne, and dryness (hairless variety)

    • Dental issues — missing or misaligned teeth are common

    • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) — an eye condition to watch for

    • Luxating patella — loose kneecaps common in small breeds

Diet

  • Does well on high-quality, protein-rich meals

  • Prone to weight gain so avoid overfeeding

  • Small, frequent meals work best for this breed

Living in Singapore

  • The warm climate suits their hairless skin but direct sun exposure should be limited

  • Light clothing or pet-safe sunscreen is recommended for outdoor walks

  • Low exercise needs make them ideal for condo or HDB living

Training

  • Intelligent and eager to please — responds well to positive reinforcement

  • Can be stubborn at times but never aggressive

  • Early socialisation is key to building confidence

  • Great at agility and tricks despite their delicate appearance

Best Suited For:

  • Apartment living

  • First-time dog owners

  • Allergy sufferers

  • Families with older children

  • Owners who love close companionship

Price Range in Singapore

  • Typically S$2,000 – S$5,000 depending on breeder and lineage

  • Relatively rare in Singapore so finding a reputable breeder may take time

Here are some tips on finding a reputable Chinese Crested breeder in Singapore and beyond!

In Singapore

Chinese Cresteds are relatively rare here, but you can try:

  • Pawfessional Singapore (pawfessional.sg), lists Chinese Crested Dogs among their available breeds

  • Dogs Singapore Community (dogs.sg). Post in our group to ask if any members know reputable breeders or have litters available

  • Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) licensed breeders. Always verify the breeder is AVA licensed before purchasing

What to Look for in a Reputable Breeder

  • Health tests puppies and provides documentation

  • Allows you to visit and meet the parents

  • Doesn't sell puppies before 8 weeks old

  • Offers post-sale support and advice

Red Flags to Avoid

  • No health certificates or vaccination records

  • Refuses home visits

  • Multiple breeds always available (puppy mill sign)

  • Price seems too low

  • Pressure to buy quickly

Importing from Overseas

  • Reputable breeders exist in Australia, the UK, and the US

  • Ensure the breeder complies with Singapore's AVA import requirements

  • Factor in quarantine, air transport, and vet costs
